Needlestick/Bloodborne Pathogen Exposures

If you experience a needlestick, sharps injury, or exposure to blood or other potentially infectious body fluids, act immediately. Reportable exposures may include needlesticks, cuts from contaminated instruments, bites, scratches, or splashes to the eyes, mouth, skin, or mucous membranes.

What to do:

  1. Wash the affected area immediately with soap and water. If the exposure involves your eyes, use an eyewash station.
  2. Notify your immediate supervisor or preceptor right away.
  3. Your supervisor will help initiate the appropriate OU Health exposure reporting and evaluation process by contacting the Student Health Clinic at (572) 244-0078.
  4. For serious injuries or urgent after-hours situations, seek immediate care at the OU Health University of Oklahoma Medical Center Emergency Department.
The Student Health Clinic should still be notified for any needlestick or bloodborne pathogen event.
