Join us for “Lines of Legacy: Exploring and Creating Ledger Art” on February 28th from 12 PM to 1 PM in the HSC Student Union Room 260 to explore the rich history and cultural significance of ledger art.

What is Ledger Art?
Ledger art is a distinctive form of Native American storytelling that emerged in the 19th century, primarily among Plains tribes such as the Cheyenne, Lakota, and Kiowa. Originally painted on buffalo hides, this artistic tradition adapted to paper when Indigenous artists, often those on reservations, used discarded ledger books as canvases. These vibrant illustrations captured narratives of personal and tribal identity, resistance, and daily life, preserving histories that were often suppressed through forced assimilation policies.

What to Expect:

  • A brief historical overview of ledger art and its evolution
  • A hands-on opportunity to create your own ledger art piece

This event offers a unique opportunity to connect with Indigenous artistry, learn about its historical context, and engage in creative expression. No prior artistic experience is needed—just bring your curiosity and appreciation for Indigenous storytelling!

We hope to see you there!
