HSC Student Association Leadership Update and Position Available Deadline to apply: Monday, January 30, by midnight Congratulations to Ryan Northup, the newly elected HSC Student Association Vice President / Senate Chair! Ryan's undertaking of the VP role has left a new vacancy in the Campus Activities Board (CAB) Chair position. If you are interested in planning our campus wide social activities (ex. Spring Fling week and happy hours) and joining our dynamic Executive Board team, please email Geneva-Whitney@ouhsc.edu. The deadline to express interest in running is Monday, January 30, by midnight. The HSC Student Association Executive Board will then select a new CAB Chair from the nominees. Monday, January 30 – 10:00-11:30 am This session will cover searching PubMed, the National Library of Medicine's free biomedical database that includes Medline. We will discuss searching with subject headings and keywords; limits and formats; full text access; printing, saving, or exporting citations; searching by author, journal title, or known citation; and saving searches or setting up a search alert. Please join the Bird Library Reference staff at one or more of the classes offered during the Spring 2012 semester. All classes are hands-on and held in the Bird Library Teaching Lab, LIB 380D, unless otherwise noted. Space is limited for many of these courses so please register online by going to http://library.ouhsc.edu/Events2/showallevents.cfm. GSA sponsored T-shirt Design Competition for GREAT Symposium Deadline: February 1, 2012 We are proposing a competition of designing a logo for our upcoming GREAT (Graduate Research Education and Technology Symposium) event for 2012. This Symposium brings all graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to present their research and participate in various other events such as OK-BioScience roundtable, Career Development workshop, Poster and Oral presentation workshops, Research vendor show and a Keynote address. The winner of the T-shirt design competition will receive $50.00 and will be recognized following the Keynote address on the final day of GREAT week. The deadline to submit your logo is Feb. 1, 2012. Searching CINAHL and SPORTDiscus Wednesday, February 1 – 1:00-2:30 pm This session will prepare users to search the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and the SPORTDiscus databases through the EBSCO interface. Content will be focused on developing effective and efficient search strategies so that participants can find the information they need. Date: PC/Windows Computers (12-23-11) & MAC/OS X Computers (12-15-11) Location: https://ouhsc.desire2learn.com (download link is posted in red header area) Need Help with Reinstall-Contact: IT Service Desk or your college tech support staff University Health Club Beginners Self-defense/Karate program Tuesdays, February 7th through February 28th This 4 week Beginners Self-defense/Karate program is structured to help the beginner to solve assault problems against a larger stronger opponent who may grab you in various attack situations. The defenses taught will include choke attack, bear hug, punch attack, head lock defense and various knife and weapon attacks. Training on how to use your knees and elbows as striking parts from Muay Thai, Kicks from Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, Jiu Jitsu submission holds will all be explored and taught in this program. Week 1 - Front Kick, Ridge Hand Strike, and Choke Defenses Week 2 - Proper punch technique and defense against punch attack Week 3 - Round kick, Head lock, and Bear hug defense Week 4 - Knife defenses with Jiu Jitsu disarms and submission All striking techniques to be applied against targets and striking bags. This class will start February 7th and continue through February 28th, meeting on Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m. Cost of $30 for members and $40 for non-members. University Health Club, 1000 N.
