The Gender + Equality Center pleased to host our second annual Lavender Graduation for LGBTQIA+ students on Thursday, May 7, 2020. Out of an abundance of caution for our OU community and to mitigate the spread of the novel corona virus (COVID-19), we have decided to host our first virtual Lavender Graduation to celebrate the accomplishment of our graduates.
Lavender Graduations began in 1995 at the University of Michigan as a cultural celebration for LGBTQIA+ students of all races and ethnicities in order to acknowledges their achievements and contributions to the university as students who survived the college experience. This celebration of the culmination of a student’s undergraduate career is important to honor in the context of their identity; Lavender Graduation recognizes students with their chosen names, the correct pronouns, and celebrates the fullness of who they are. Universities across the country recognize the need to affirm graduating seniors in this manner and we are proud and honored to begin this tradition at the University of Oklahoma.
To celebrate our graduates, the Gender + Equality Center will also mail you a LGBTQIA+ cord and an alumni pin as well as other information in hope to connect our students to the network of LGBTQIA+ alumni. Please register at the link below, and we hope to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ students across campus.
Registration for the event closes on April 24th at 5 PM. Contact email@example.com to register.
